We watch movies in the dark. The reason we know when the movie is about to start in a cinema is because the lights go down. So why is lighting important is home theater?
The most basic need is that of safety. If you’re at home with the family, there is bound to be an amount of walking around being done during a movie. As annoying as it might be, children’s bladders, and attention spans aren’t as big as ours, the phone rings, chores have to be done, whatever. To move around safely in a space there has to be a bit of light.
Most importantly though is the aesthetic benefit that adds to the experience. A good light system can add, influence or change a mood which is a valuable tool if you’re planning to watch a movie. It doesn’t have to cost the earth either, you can either implement a lighting system yourself if you’re handy in the DIY department, although there are plenty of Naples lighting specialists in the Yellow Pages.
The three types of room light need to be understood before taking on something like this yourself. They are task, accent and ambient lighting. Task lighting is light that helps you do something like a spotlight or overhead light. Accent lighting is what gives a room its character by highlighting features, pictures or other room elements to create a mood. Ambient lighting is a filler, diffuse and non-directional to help create the mood along with the accent lighting.
If you’re lucky enough to have a home theater room then it’s all good. You can design a light scheme that fits in with movies and not have to worry about anything else. If you use a family room for movies then you also have to think about lighting for when you’re not watching movies.
Think carefully about what kind of mood you want to create, or whether you want the option to create several. Do you want the room to feel cozy or snug? Cool and contemporary? Each will need its own color scheme and consideration, but will pay off in spades.
Like with any project, planning is half the work. Taking your time here will save time and money further down the line. Although it isn’t as interesting as actually drilling holes and making a mess, it is an essential part of the process. Sketch it out on paper first and research the subject. Talk to the others in your household and get their feedback, raid the internet for inspiration and ideas and learn as much as you can about home theaters. Either that or put “Naples lighting” into Google and get someone else to do it!
Whatever you end up doing, adding lighting to a home theater is widely regarded as something that will greatly improve the experience. It won’t be a revolutionary change, but it will round out the room, and the movie you’re watching if done right.
